How to come up with a truly Purple Cow-y business idea

My new hero is Antone Roundy. He’s written a book called Riffs on a Purple Cow – essentially a collection of some of his blog posts – which takes Seth Godin’s ideas and explores them (“Riffs them”) in more detail. Sometimes Antone includes stories to illustrate his explorations further, and occasionally he’ll refute Seth’s opinion. If you want more info about Riffing in general, I’ve included some info at the bottom of this post. As we all know, Seth’s very big on the importance of USPs, uniqueness and being interesting…

Why we published a quarter of a million words in 2012

War and Peace

Still only half of this bad boy.

In the last nine months (starting from 14 March, when we landed in New York) we’ve published 240,500 words. That’s over four full-length novels. 890 words every day. Over the Christmas “break”, we need to write another 5,000 words (at least) for copywriting clients, and two full websites (probably 10,000 words total) for Mortified Cow clients. How introverts can get the best out of social situations

I’ve always been shy and introverted, and it’s a gigantic pain in the arse. In the course of writing the book though, I realised that it’s possible…

Why you need people to hate your site

Your business website should divide opinion. Ideally, lots of people should visit it and hate it – just like they do when they see our site, Mortified Cow. Too many businesses try to appeal to everyone. So they create a bland, boringly designed site laden with photos of handshakes and sentences that begin with “Whether you’re an x, a y or a z…”. Those businesses end up resonating with no one, which sucks because it means the only people who contact them are those on a tight budget looking for…

Five unusual destinations for adventure-seeking digital nomads

GUEST POST ALERT! This post is written by the wonderful Johannes from Webworktravel. Johannes is currently working on a destination guide for digital nomads. Here he shares some of his favourite places… If you consider the typical digital nomad destinations, Bali, Chiang Mai and Buenos Aires will probably be the first places that come to mind. I’ve visited all three, and although I like them, there are loads more amazing places on earth that offer fantastic value for money and unique experiences (when you’re not working). I personally think many places don’t…
